I left Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 2001. After 18 years, I returned home for the first time.

To say the city has changed in the years I was gone is an understatement. From the moment we touched down at Bole International Airport until the day we left, I was constantly in awe of everything.

Granted, some things in the city haven’t changed. I was still able to enjoy the foods that raised me and go though some inconveniences that are hallmarks of a developing city. I still woke up to church prayers every morning and frequented the closest shop for soda.

Watch the short documentary below to see how my short vacation in Addis Ababa went, after being away for 18 years.
