It has been an incredibly historic time in America
0:06
Protests over the killing of George Floyd have broken out in all 50 states
0:11
in large gatherings in big cities, in small crowds, in tiny towns
0:15
Although there have been numerous inspiring moments in the week of protest
0:19
here are the top five moments that have inspired us. Welcome to The Five, where we share five interesting things in black culture and society in every episode

Tamika Mallory's Viral Speech Activist Tamika Mallory is not new to the limelight
0:45
She was one of the leading organizers of the 2017 Women's March and was included in Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People that year
0:55
On May 29th, Tamika gave an electrifying speech at a rally in Minneapolis that took the internet by storm
1:02
This is a coordinated activity happening across this nation. And so we are in a state of emergency. Black people are dying in a state of emergency
1:15
We cannot look at this as an isolated incident. The reason why buildings are burning are not just for our brother George Floyd
1:26
They burning down because people here in Minnesota are saying to people in New York to people in California to people in Memphis to people all across this nation enough is enough
1:43
And we are not responsible for the mental illness that has been inflicted upon our people by the American government, institutions, and those people who are in positions of power
1:56
I don't give a damn if they burn down Target. Because Target should be on the streets with us calling for the justice that our people deserve
2:06
Where was AutoZone at the time when Philando Castile was shot in a car, which is what they actually represent
2:14
Where were they? So if you are not coming to the people's defense, then don't challenge us when young people
2:22
and other people who are frustrated and instigated by the people you pay
2:26
You are paying instigators to be among our people out there, throwing rocks, breaking windows, and burning down buildings
2:36
And so young people are responding to that. They are enraged, and there's an easy way to stop it
2:42
Arrest the cops. Charge the cops. Charge all the cops. Not just some of them
2:48
Not just here in Minneapolis. charge them in every city across America where our people are being murdered
2:56
Charge them everywhere. That's the bottom line. Charge the cops. Do your job. Do what
3:03
you say this country is supposed to be about the land of the free for all. It has not been
3:09
free for black people and we are tired Don talk to us about looting Y are the looters America has looted black people The Human Chain of Protection
3:20
Protesters across the country band together to protect each other, and in one instance to protect a police officer
3:30
In Louisville, Kentucky, a chain of white women formed a barrier between black protesters and the police
3:35
making sure if any force was to come from the police to disband the protests, they would face it first
3:43
In the same city, a group of black men formed a human chain to protect a police officer that was separated from his unit
3:49
Although an overwhelmingly majority of protests are peaceful, there are some who might take the opportunity to take their frustrations out on police officers
3:59
This group of black men made sure that would not happen on their watch
4:05
Massive crowds around the world. Protesting in massive crowds is one thing
4:14
Protesting in massive crowds during a pandemic is a whole nother thing
4:19
But that's exactly what cities around the world did to support the Black Lives Matter movement
4:23
From Auckland, New Zealand, to Berlin, Germany, to London, England, to Paris, France, and even in Amsterdam in the Netherlands, the support of the global community has shown the fight for equality is beyond inspiring
4:38
D.C. Mayor paints Black Lives Matter on the road to the White House
4:44
It is no secret that President Trump has been no friend to the Black Lives Matter movement He has expressed disdain for NFL players taking a knee to protest police brutality and called rioters thugs in the current protest On top of that he had peaceful
4:59
protesters outside of the White House gassed and cleared so he can have a photo op in front of a
5:05
church. In response to his action and rhetoric, D.C. Mayor Murrow Browser had Black Lives Matter
5:11
painted in huge letters on the road leading to the White House. Not to be outdone, those who want
5:17
the mayor to go further than simply embracing the term Black Lives Matter, wrote defund the
5:22
police in the same fashion next to her statement. Removing Confederate statues
5:29
The case to remove Confederate statues has long been a controversial issue that once again gains
5:36
some momentum during the current uprisings. Virginia Governor Ralph Northam announced that
5:41
Richmond's largest Confederate statue, that of Robert E. Lee, would be removed. More have already
5:47
come down in Birmingham and Mobile, Alabama, Louisville, Kentucky, Jacksonville, Florida, and Alexandria, Virginia, among other places. This movement is not just contained in the United
5:57
States. In Belgium, statues of King Leopold II have become targets of the movement. The king was
6:04
responsible for a brutal conquest and tyrannical rule over what is now the Democratic Republic of
6:09
Congo, killing millions of Congolese people. In London, the statue of 18th century slave owner
6:16
Robert Milligan was removed from its place in London's Docklands. That's it for this episode of The Five. We'll be back with another episode on black culture and history
